Join us now, end the physical punishment of children
It’s time to end the physical punishment of children across the whole of the UK.
We know that physical punishment is harmful to children. But the law in England and Northern Ireland still allows it.
Now is the time for action. Ask the Governments in England and Northern Ireland to make sure children can grow up free from harm.
Scotland and Wales have already changed the law. But children in England and Northern Ireland are being left behind.
Currently, there’s a defence of ‘reasonable punishment’ in the law in England and Northern Ireland. But causing harm to children should never be considered ‘reasonable’.
The law must be changed to give children the protection they deserve across the whole of the UK.
Why does the law need to change?
-
We know that physical punishment is harmful to children – it can impact children’s physical, mental and emotional health.
-
A change to the law would make it clear that children should not experience physical punishment. This would help professionals protect children and support parents and carers to find positive solutions.
-
Right now, children have less protection from physical harm than adults. Children deserve the same protection. Every child deserves to grow up feeling safe.
